POSITION AVAILABLE: August 16, 2024. Position is subject to renewal each semester.  

 

WORK SCHEDULE: 20 hours/week, as arranged with supervisor: Monday through Friday, between 8:30am and 5pm.

Collaborate with University of Texas Campus Collections Partners as they learn about and evaluate
potential uses for emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and extended reality in campus
cultural heritage collections, work with stakeholders to learn about how emerging technologies may
change the act of discovery in our collections, and assist in providing a space for our libraries, archives &
museums teams to reflect on technological change and the tools our organizations use to guide it.

DUTIES:   This position will assist in exploring innovative uses of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and extended reality to assist the Campus Collections in making their rich content more accessible in future
research environments. This position will assist in exploring the questions, “As we collect our information into
an aggregated collection, what new forms of research might this enable? How will we need to modify our
approach to collecting as our faculty and student stakeholders bring new technologies into their research and
teaching?” This position will engage in local collections partner discussion/interest groups and provide
logistics support where appropriate. This position will assist evaluation teams as they identify and evaluate
applications for use in Libraries, Archives, or Museums. The Research Assistant may also be tasked with
drafting technical documentation and with other projects as needs arise.



REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  UT Austin graduate student in good standing at the iSchool, enrolled for at least nine [9] semester hours for each long semester (fall and spring) and three [3] semester hours for summer session.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with any of the following: AI applications, XR application development, reading or learning group coordination, scripting languages, data visualization, data cleaning or manipulation, digital libraries or digital collections expertise, metadata
  • Awareness of current issues in artificial intelligence, extended reality, or metadata aggregation especially as they relate to applications in libraries, archives, and museums
  • Awareness of techniques used to aggregate information and provide digital access to broad user groups
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Promotion and marketing skills, especially social media
     

We want to emphasize that although experience in certain areas is desirable, candidates who meet the required qualifications and demonstrate excellent promise are encouraged to apply and will be given serious consideration.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: Regular indoor working conditions.

 

SALARY/BENEFITS: $1733 per month. Exemption from non-resident tuition. Benefits eligible. TRB is not available for this position for long semesters.
