Robert H. McDonald is Senior Vice Provost and Director of the University of Texas Libraries (UT Libraries) at The University of Texas at Austin. Robert leads the Austin campus library system in fulfilling its mission to advance teaching, catalyze research, and democratize learning to develop critical thinkers and global citizens.
His expertise and research interests include the integration of learning ecosystems, scaled online learning, micro-credentials, agile frameworks, open source software, open educational resources, new models of scholarly communication, digital libraries, and digital preservation.
He is professionally active with a number of national and international organizations and conferences, including current service on the Educause Nominations and Leadership Development Committee and the UPCEA Annual Conference Committee. His past service includes the Association of Research Libraries Board of Directors and the HathiTrust Board of Governors.
Prior to joining the UT Libraries in 2025, Robert held positions at the University of Colorado Boulder, Indiana University Bloomington, the San Diego Supercomputer Center, Florida State University, and Auburn University. He earned his Master of Library and Information Science degree at the University of South Carolina, and holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Georgia.
