Disruptions in the Global Scientific Ecosystem
with Cassidy R. Sugimoto
Dean and Professor, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Carnegie Mellon University
About the Talk
Global science has long been narrated as a story of ever-deepening integration, with rising international co-authorships, dense collaboration networks, and a multi-centered core spanning North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Yet recent bibliometric evidence reveals that this globalization is fragmenting. Drawing on large-scale publication and collaboration networks, this talk examines how shifts in scientific production, impact and co-authorship patterns signal a reorganization of the global ecosystem — from “science without borders” toward a polarized system in which superpowers and their allies reshape knowledge flows, absorptive capacity and the very idea of a shared global science.
About the Speaker
Cassidy R. Sugimoto is an internationally recognized scholar, author and academic leader whose work examines how research systems are organized, evaluated and resourced, and how they can be reshaped to advance equity, innovation and the public good. Her book “Equity for Women in Science” has been influential in demonstrating how structural conditions in scientific institutions limit participation and recognition, and in outlining evidence-based strategies for change. She is the Bess Family Dean and Professor in the Marianna Brown Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University.
