When: 1-3 p.m. Monday, November 13, 2017.

Where: Fine Arts Library (DFA 3.200) at The University of Texas at Austin.

Background: The Fine Arts Library presents a workshop with a Library of Congress archivist focusing on the preservation of performing arts, specifically dance.

launched the organization’s preservations programs and services for artists and their companies. Smigel is now with the Music Division at the Library of Congress where she is currently the dance curator and archivist.

For the opening portion of the workshop, Smigel will discuss dance preservation in general and review the Artist’s Legacy Toolkit (www.danceheritage.org/artisttoolkit.html) and best practices for records management (www.danceheritage.org/recordsmanagement.html) which she developed while she led efforts at the DHC. She will have examples from work with artists to show how to adapt principles to a variety of requirements and resources. The second portion of the workshop will be devoted to addressing questions posed by attendees.

Discussions are expected to cover a breadth of related issues about and strategies for archiving dance, formatting issues, copyrights, evaluating materials and acquisition strategies.
