- Updated regularly. The American Petroleum Institute (API) maintains more than 500 documents that apply to many segments of the oil and gas industry - from drill bits to environmental protection. API standards advocate proven, sound engineering and operating practices and safe, interchangeable equipment and materials.
Some of the key aspects of the oil and gas industry that are addressed in API standards include exploration and production; refining; fire protection and safety; petroleum measurement; and marine transportation. API standards also reference offshore production, drilling, structural pipe, pipeline, health and environmental issues, and valves and storage tanks.
API standards include manuals, standards, specifications, recommended practices, bulletins, guidelines and technical reports.
