Maps and Atlases

The Geology Library maintains a collection of geologic maps, the Tobin International Geologic Map Collection. This collection includes the map series of the United States Geological Survey, UT's Bureau of Economic Geology, and many state geologic surveys and foreign countries.

Maps in the Geology Library's Tobin Collection all emphasize surface and subsurface geology, hydrology, mineral resources, and structural features, rather than social, political, or topographic features.

The Tobin Collection maintains a collection of topographic maps for Texas only. A full set of U.S. topographic maps are in the map collection of the Perry-Castaneda Library, the primary map collection of the University of Texas Libraries .

The Tobin Collection is not fully cataloged, but has a straightforward geographical filing system. For assistance using the Tobin Collection, please ask for help at the Geology Library. A project started in 1987 has added records for the Tobin Collection to the University of Texas Libraries ' On-line Catalog. Over 43,000 maps have already been entered into the system.

The Benson Latin American Collection and the Center for American History, both in Sid Richardson Hall, each have map collections for their special areas of interest. Please consult with staff at those locations for more information.

Atlases on a variety of thematic topics are available throughout the University of Texas Libraries . The primary atlas location is in the map collection of the Perry-Castaneda Library. The Geology Library has a collection of atlases dealing with earth structures and resources. These atlases are on the Atlas Stand in the Geology Library reading room and on the oversize shelving area in the back room of the Geology Library. Please ask if you need help locating atlas materials.

Computer-Based Information Services

GeoRef, the electronic version of The Bibliography and Index of Geology, produced and compiled by the American Geological Institute, is available for interactive end-user computer searching by members of the UT Austin community on the University of Texas Libraries Indexes to Articles web page. Non-UT Austin visitors to the library can search GeoRef in any of the UT Austin the University of Texas Libraries branches. GeoRef now contains references from 1785 to the present for North America and from 1933 to the present for international coverage.

For more information about GEOREF, consult the Walter Geology Library web pages .

Library Catalog

This is the best source for information on recently published titles, and, while it does not include all items in the UT libraries, the Geology library has been completely entered into the system. You can search the catalog by author, by title, by keywords in the title, title or subject, and by call number. At this time, records indicate which location the item is in, and whether it is currently checked out.

Besides GeoRef, there are a variety of other bibliographic and full-text databases available on the University of Texas Libraries web pages and through the University of Texas Libraries "information stations" located in the Geology Library and other University Libraries. Many of these sources may contain information of interest to students and researchers in earth science fields.
